Lately, I like watch musical
dramas or animated videos from musical dramas. One of the musicals I like is Hamilton:
An American Musical. Hamilton: An American Musical is a sung- and
rapped-through musical that tells the life of the founding father of
the United States, Alexander Hamilton. Unlike the usual musicals, these
musicals include hip hop, R & B, pop, soul, traditional-style show tunes,
and color-conscious casting of non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and
other historical figures. As a fan of rap and hip hop, I'm very excited about
this musical. I will tell my favorite songs from this musical.
1 1.
My Shot
Hamilton tries to impresses Aaron Burr,
John Laurens,
the Marquis de Lafayette,
and Hercules Mulligan with his rhetorical skills,
speaking about his hopes for the future, his disillusionment with the British
and his desire to be remembered, even if it means dying. My favorite parts are
when they spell Hamilton’s name, the refrain and the rap part. My favorite
lyrics are “Don’t be shocked when your hist’ry book mentions me; I will lay
down my life if it sets us free” and “Hey yo, I’m just like my country;
I’m young, scrappy and hungry; And I’m not throwing away my shot”
2.
You’ll Be Back
King George III is
dismayed by the American War of Independence and expresses
his belief that the American Colonists will crawl back to the British
Empire once their rebellion is squashed. My favorite part is when
King George III sing “dadadadada”. My
favorite lyrics are” I will send a
fully armed battalion to remind you of my love!” and “I will kill
your friends and family to remind you of my love”

3.
Right Hand Man
The song introduces then General George
Washington to the musical. It is also the song in which Hamilton
becomes the "Right hand man". My favorite parts are when General
George Washington enters and the rap parts. My favorite lyrics is “Dying is
easy, young man. Living is harder”
4.
Helpless
This song focuses on the romance and eventual
wedding of Eliza Schuyler and Alexander Hamilton. My favorite part is when Eliza
sing “ I do I do I do” at the beginning. This song is really cute and lovely.
5. Satisfied
"Satisfied" begins with Angelica
Schuyler's wedding toast for Alexander Hamilton and Eliza (her sister), then
proceeds to rewind and retell the events of the previous song,
"Helpless," from her own perspective. She, who in "The Schuyler
Sisters" had declared was looking for a "mind at work", has now
found it in Hamilton yet is forced to give it up for the sake of her sister.
This song was the first song I listened from this musical. I love how the
singer rap the song that makes this song is ‘strong’. My favorite parts is when
Angelica rap and the wedding tost near the end of the song. My favorite lyrics
are “If I tell her
that I love him she’d be silently resigned; He’d be mine;
She would say, “I’m fine”; She’d be
lying” and “At least my
dear Eliza’s his wife; At least I
keep his eyes in my life…”.
6. 6. Guns And Ships
Marquis de Lafayette is introduced for the
second time in the musical and traces a route to cut off British forces. He
also convinces Washington to offer Hamilton the command he has requested for so
long. Washington reluctantly agrees and calls Hamilton back into the army,
giving him the command and letting him lead the American forces. I love the
full-spririted rap in the song.
7. Yorktown (The World Turn
Upside Down)
Alexander Hamilton, having been promoted to a
command position in the Continental Army by George Washington,
meeting with his friend Marquis de Lafayette and
discussing their plans after the impending conclusion of the war. I like the part when Hamilton talks
the strategy to the soldiers and Mulligan’s rap part.
8.
Burn
Eliza is devastated when she receives news of
Hamilton's affair through the publication The Reynolds Pamphlet. She sings about
the affectionate love in his letters and words he had shown her for years and
wonders what it means. Eliza mentions her anger, shock, and embarrassment, and
is depressed over the affair. She talks about the children, and how they can
feel affected by the affair. I really love this song because this song
shows Eliza’s strength through the highnotes. I love many lyrics from this
song, they are “Do you know what Angelica
said; When we saw your first letter arrive? She said “Be careful
with that one, love. He will do what it takes to survive.”, “You
published the letters she wrote to you; You told the whole world; How you
brought this girl into our bed; In clearing your name, you have ruined our
lives”, “Do you know what Angelica said. When I told her
what you'd done? She said "You have married an Icarus. He has flown too
close to the sun", “You and your
words, obsessed with your legacy...; Your sentences border on senseless; And
you are paranoid in every paragraph; How they perceive you” and “I'm
erasing myself from the narrative; Let future historians wonder how Eliza
reacted; When you broke her heart” .
9.
Congratulations
Angelica angrily and tearfully confronts
Alexander about his actions after he had published The Reynolds Pamphlet and destroyed Eliza, who had cared so deeply about him. She
vows she will never trust Alexander the same way and makes him oath to realize
what he had been given and what he had lost when he shattered his bond with
Eliza. Unfortunately, this song is not performed at the Broadway but some lines
from this song is added to “Reynold Pamphlet”. I love the part when Angelica
say “I am not here for you”. My favorite lyrics are “So scared of what you
enemies will do to you; You're the only enemy you ever seem to lose to; You
know why Jefferson can do what he wants?; He doesn't dignify school yard taunts
with a response”, “I know my sister like I know my own mind; You will never
find anyone as trusting or as kind”, “I love my sister more than anything in this
life; I will choose her happiness over mine every time” and “So never
lose sight of the fact that you have been; Blessed with the best wife”.
10.
Who Lives Who Dies Who
Tells Your Story
The company of Hamilton ends the
musical by Eliza explaining the remainder of events after Alexander Hamilton's death: including her
founding of the first private orphanage in New York City, and contributions in
collecting funds for the Washington Monument. She helps recognize famous faces
in history, such as presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. She reviews Alexander's pages
of writings and cannot imagine how he writes like he is "running out of
time". Eliza wonders how much more Hamilton could have accomplished if he
had what he wanted most: time. My favorite lyrics are “And when my time is up; Have
I done enough; Will they tell your story” and “I help raise hundreds of children;
I get to see them growing up; In their eyes I see you, Alexander; I see you
every time”
That's my 10 favorite songs from Hamilton: An American Musical, you can watch the animation version with clicking the links above. I hope you can enjoy it.
