Becoming Sasak-Javanese
Although
I was born in West Nusa Tenggara, I have spent most of my life in Java.
However, my parents have constantly ensured that I kept in mind my Sasak
culture.. They always tell stories of what it was like to live in West Nusa Tenggara,
Lombok. Likewise, when there was an occasion or huge festival my mom always make sure to cook our traditional food.
As a result, i value my ethnic culture, though i live in java.
Sasak
language is an important aspect of my life. Unlike some of my friends, I don’t
think Sasak language is humiliating. It is rich of dialects and every region is
different. I’m so proud of it and I think it is my obligation as a Sasak ethnic
to conserve sasak language and pass it on my children.
Sasak
tradition is the other important aspect of my life. One of the reason is that
all of our tradition has history and meaning, for example, Bebubus Batu. It is
a ceremony that was held to ask blessings from the Almighty. This ceremony is
held annually, led by Penghulu (stakeholders) and Kiai (religious experts). Usually,
the society is wearing traditional clothes and carrying trays containing
offering.
In
conclusion, everyone must value and preserve their culture wherever we are. It
is our duty. Furthermore the regional culture is part of our identity as a
nation. Without preservation, we will lose our personal identity.
