Lately I like reading Chinese translation novels. At first I just felt bored with the online stories I read. Until I found a Chinese translation novel in my favorite genre, Omegaverse. I read it and felt interested because of the exciting storyline.
Even though in the beginning I felt rather uncomfortable because translation novels usually had language that was difficult to understand. Besides that, Chinese novels have so many chapters. Some reach hundreds or even thousands, but that all already paid off with the excitement of the story. In addition, Chinese novels have various themes and genres such as reincarnation / transmigration, showbiz, cultivation, western fantasy (like.. well, angels, demons, elves, etc), imperial, apocalipse, beastmen and many more. These themes are dominated by elements of fantasy that I really like.
I benefited a lot from my new hobby. First, I know the culture and habits of Chinese people from the novels I read. For example, on the seventh day in July (the lunar calendar) they will celebrate the Qixi festival or Chinese Valentine's Day. They also believe that after they die they will experience reincarnation and before 'crossing' they must drink Meng Po's soup to erase memories in their previous lives. Second, I add vocabulary in both Chinese and English. Chinese vocabulary can be obtained because sometimes translators use pinyin term rather than translating it. I got the English vocabulary when I decided to read directly from the English translator instead of waiting to be translated in Indonesian. Lastly, I get useful leisure time entertainment.
Overall, reading foreign literary works no matter where they come from is very useful to know their culture, history and language.
