Psychological Injuries That Arise From Failure
Failure exists as part of human
existence. Failure also makes us feel so weak, helpless, and do not want to do
anything. Failure can leave wounds and pain so imprint on us. so that, without us knowing it, there are psychological
injuries that arise due to failure itself like damage
self-esteem, weaken expectations, reduce self-confidence and motivation.
The first is
damaging self-esteem. When someone fails, often labeling theirself like,
"I'm really stupid", "I really don't deserve success",
"what a loser", and other similar negative statements. Such negative
labeling actually further hurts our self-esteem. Some consider it, by giving a
label in the form of a statement that is able to release emotions from failure.
However, the more often we fill ourselves with confusing thoughts, the easier
it is to internalize within us. As if we give self-justification that indeed we
are a foolish, loser, and pathetic. Maybe we often remind our colleagues not to
curse themselves when they experience adversity, including failure. However, we
unwittingly also often condemn ourselves when we have not got what we want. We
even forget to love ourselves
.
The next is weaken
our expectations. Failures experienced can make us lose hope. The loss of hope
makes us want to give up and forget about the possibility of success in the
future. We also become pessimistic about trying to pursue desires because we
feel that this desire is difficult for us to achieve. Have we ever realized
that failure is so persuasive to kill our hopes? Our experiences that have
failed to convince us that there is no chance to be happy, to live perfectly.
After believing that, we stopped to try. In addition, failure can also be
misleading. It can be misleading because we judge stories that have not
succeeded in our lives not as shortcomings or trials for our persistence in
struggling, but as confirmation that success is indeed something that is
impossible to obtain. The more we allow ourselves to sink into pessimism and
helplessness, the more we make ourselves hurt.
The last is reduce
our self-confidence and motivation. We live in a variety of pressures and
expectations, both from within and outside ourselves. The pressure that fills
our lives contributes to the emergence of fear if it doesn't work later. Plus,
the expectation of yourself or the closest person also adds to our worries. We
also become more focused on fear and worry than effort and positive thoughts to
achieve what we want. When we fail, things that make us afraid and worry come
true. Then, it has an impact on the weakening of our self-confidence and
motivation. We see ourselves as incompetent to achieve success, full of
weakness, and have dreams that are too big. We seem to sabotage our ability
that we will never be able to achieve what is desired and there is no point in
trying.
All in all, failure
leave pain and psychological
injuries that arise due to failure itself like damage
self-esteem, weaken expectations, reduce self-confidence and motivation. However, failure can be a
valuable experience. We need to be aware of the influence given, feel the hurt
and pain caused, then look for ways to deal with it. Thus, we are able to
strengthen our strength against failure.
