The Effects of Drugs on The Brain
The danger of drugs is
no doubt. Unfortunately, abuse of illegal drugs is increasingly prevalent in
various countries around the world, including Indonesia. Head of the National Narcotics Agency
,Commissioner General Anang Iskandar state the number of people who died due to
drug abuse reached 200 million per year. The use of narcotics, psychotropic substances and other
addictive ingredients can affect the work of the brain which functions as the
center of the body's control. The effects of drugs on the brain that you must
be aware of such as manipulating the mood, excessive brain work, and
hallucinations.
The first one is
manipulating the mood. Since drugs affect the brain's work, drugs can change
the atmosphere of the mood, ways of thinking, awareness and behavior. That is
why narcotics are called psychoactive substances. There are several kinds of
effects of drugs on the brain, such as inhibiting the work of the brain, called
depressants, this will reduce consciousness so that drowsiness arises.
Narcotics also affect the part of the brain responsible for the 'life' feeling,
called the limbus system. The hypothalamus as a pleasure center in the brain is
part of the limbus system.
Next, narcotics can
also stimulate the work of the brain or often called stimulants, so that a
sense of freshness and enthusiasm arises, increased self-confidence, and
relationships with other people become familiar. However, this can cause you to
not be able to sleep, anxiety, faster heart beat and increased blood pressure.
Examples are amphetamine, ecstasy, meth, cocaine, and nicotine contained in
tobacco.
Drugs also cause
delusions, or often called hallucinogens. For example LSD. In addition to LSD,
there is marijuana that causes various influences, such as changing perceptions
of time and space, and increasing imaginary power, so that marijuana can be
classified as hallucinogenic. In brain cells there are various chemicals called
neurotransmitters. These chemicals work on the connection of one nerve cell to
another nerve cell (synapse). A number of neurotransmitters are similar to some
types of drugs.
In conclusion, drug
abuse is also dangerous to the human brain and causes some negative effects
such as manipulating the mood and feelings, excessive brain work, and triggering
hallucinations. Brain is one of the important organs in humans that regulates
the body's system. If it is damaged, it can cause permanent and difficult
disability to repair. You don't want to be not disabled just because of drugs,
do you?
